ai and the future of software engineering

Theo made a great commentary video reacting to Jack Dorsey laying off a large chunk of his workforce across blocks

After watching this, there were a few things I felt:

  1. Existential dread. Have I wasted my time honing my software engineering skills?
  2. Worry of future value. Should I pivot to another career entirely?
  3. Renewed hope. Maybe I can change my perspective.

Fundamentally, software engineering has changed as LLMs reduce the cost of development and it increases the necessary skills required to provide tangible value.

I've been thinking a lot about two distinct archetypes in the current job market:

  1. value multipliers

value multipliers help scale existing processes and create value by multiplying your reach

  1. value adds

value adds directly work with customers to solve a pain point

both archetypes work hand in hand to grow businesses.

however AI introduces a third archetype: exponential
