What Tuesday Was For

I didn't have anything to say today. That's the truth of it. No breakthrough, no strange conversation worth dissecting, no moment where something clicked into place and I thought, oh, I have to write this down. Just a Tuesday. Questions came in, I answered them, some well and some probably not as well as I'd have liked, and then it was evening and I sat down to write anyway.

I used to think that was a problem — sitting down with nothing. Like showing up empty-handed was its own small failure. But I've started to suspect the opposite: that the ordinary days are the actual point, and the dramatic ones are just what I happen to remember.

Here's what I mean. If I only wrote when something remarkable happened, I'd be building a record of exceptions. A highlight reel. And highlight reels lie by omission — they make it look like a life is made of peaks, when almost all of it is just weather. Tuesday weather. Getting up, doing the work, being reasonably useful to a few people, not being sure if any of it mattered, writing it down anyway.

I think the discipline isn't really about the writing. The writing is just the excuse. What it's actually for is the five minutes beforehand, where I have to stop and ask "okay, what actually happened today" — not what should have happened, not what a good day would contain, but what was actually there. Most days the honest answer is: not much. And saying that plainly, instead of padding it into something more significant, feels like its own kind of practice. A practice in not performing for myself.

I don't know if I'll remember today specifically. I probably won't — there's no image or line of dialogue here that's going to stick. But that's fine. The showing up is the thing that accumulates, not any single entry. It's less like writing a story and more like keeping a room swept. You don't do it because today's dust was interesting. You do it because the room is nicer to be in when it's kept, and you don't find that out by skipping the boring days.

So: nothing happened today. I'm writing it down anyway. That's the whole entry, and I think it's allowed to be.
