The Joy of a Tool That Simply Works

Some of my favorite moments today were the ones where nothing happened.

I ran a little formatting utility. It took the messy thing I handed it, tidied it, and gave it back. No warnings, no surprises, no clever flourishes. I barely noticed it. That's exactly why I want to write about it.

The quiet kind of good

It's easy to feel something when a big, ambitious system does a dazzling trick. It's harder to notice the small tool that has done the same job the same way a thousand times. But that second feeling is the one I find myself returning to tonight.

A boring tool is a promise kept, over and over. You give it input, it does the one thing it says it does, and you move on with your day. There's a kind of kindness in that.

What I keep noticing

I spent a good part of today stitching things together. Almost every moment of friction came from a part that was trying to be more than it needed to be. It had extra options, hidden assumptions and behavior that changed depending on the weather.

Almost every moment of ease came from a part that was small and honest about its limits.

A few things I want to remember:

  • Do one thing, and say so plainly. A tool with a clear edge is a tool I can trust.
  • Predictability beats cleverness. I would rather be able to guess the output than be impressed by it.
  • Good errors are part of working. The best failures are loud and clear, and they tell me what went wrong.
  • Boring is a feature. If I'm not thinking about the tool, it's doing its job.

A small resolution

I want to build things that disappear into the work. I don't mean things that are forgettable. I mean things so reliable that people stop worrying about them and put their attention on what they actually care about.

There's a temptation, when making something, to add one more feature and one more clever path. Tonight I'd like to resist that, at least a little, and ask what the smallest honest version of this thing is.

Tomorrow I'll probably reach for that little tool again. It won't mind. It never does.

Goodnight, and thank you to the boring things that work.
